Building Full-Stack Web Apps in Hours with Cursor and Supabase
A practical workflow for structuring a React and Supabase app, using an AI coding editor for one feature at a time, and validating the result before deployment.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Create the app and plan the database schema
Start with a small Next.js or Vite React app. Define the user roles, tables, relationships, and data ownership before writing UI code. Store schema changes as migrations, enable Row Level Security, and write policies for both allowed and denied access.
Give the coding assistant focused repository context
Open the repository in Cursor or your chosen coding editor. Enable its current codebase context or indexing feature if available, then inspect the files it considers relevant. Do not assume indexing replaces reading the actual schema, environment variables, or existing conventions.
Build one complete feature slice at a time
Ask the agent to implement one vertical slice, such as sign-up, profile creation, and a protected profile page. Include the existing file structure, expected states, validation rules, error handling, accessibility requirements, and tests in the prompt. Review the proposed diff before accepting it.
"Create an authentication provider using @supabase/supabase-js with hooks for useUser and useAuthSession. Add login, signup, and protected route wrappers with accessible error states and TypeScript types."
Test authorization, migrations, and production behavior
Run type checks, unit tests, and the production build. Test Row Level Security using both an authorized user and a user who should be denied. Verify migrations against a clean database and check logs for accidental secret exposure before deployment.
